Rochester and the Environment

A Commitment to being Green and Clean

Rochester Electronics is steadfast in its commitment to environmentally sustainable processes, pollution prevention, and a continual improvement focus on our manufacturing and distribution operations. Across all sectors of Rochester’s business, the goal of maintaining and protecting Earth’s environment is a core pillar of the business.

Rochester is fully ISO-14001:2015 certified, which is an internationally agreed standard that sets out the requirements for an environmental management system. With recycling programs in place, we can capture waste metals and remove them from the waste stream for recycling. From Jan-April 2023, the Newburyport facilities water reclamation plant recycled 661,952 gallons of water. That is 661,952 gallons of water retained in the local aquifer, and not discharged into the city sewer system for treatment.

The ISO-14001 certification means that Rochester fully complies with:

  • All air emissions are well below permit requirements

  • We produce zero hazardous spills onto land or unintentional releases into the air

  • 100% of lead on-site is recycled

  • All hazardous waste is processed by a licensed 3rd party vendor, ensuring waste is recycled/reclaimed in accordance with EPA/MADEP requirements.

Rochester has certified that 100% of standard production hazardous waste streams are “Zero Waste to Landfill.” This means all hazardous waste Rochester Electronics creates during manufacturing has been and will be fully recycled, repurposed, reclaimed, or reused. Waste will never be sent to be buried or to a landfill, eliminating all legacy waste.

Rochester’s warehouse and other facilities are working to reduce lighting energy consumption. Switching to LED lighting saves up to 20% in energy while improving lighting. All fluorescent lights are shipped to environmentally safe waste U-listed EPA facilities.

As an authorized after-market distributor, Rochester receives surplus devices directly from the original component manufacturers. In the past, these surplus components were scrapped rather than allowed to re-enter the market in a controlled manner, leading to considerable waste.

By the nature of Rochester’s business, ensuring product continuity and lengthening lifecycles creates long-term clean business practices. Fewer devices are sent to landfills, less energy needs to be spent on product creation, fewer emissions are created by transportation, and energy will not need to be expended in device implementation. By keeping current products functioning, resources do not need to be spent on expensive implementations.

Finally, all Rochester employees are required to take environmental best practices training. These classes teach the importance of green practices and how to take steps toward a cleaner future. Environmental safety is a core value for each Rochester employee.

Despite all achievements made to be green and clean, this is only the beginning for Rochester. Plans are in place for even more processes to be made efficient and strides toward a fully green Rochester.
