Siemens Mobility Inc. & Rochester Electronics: MBTA Red Line EPLD Replacement

A collaborative case study

The Boston MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) Red Line faced an obsolescence challenge when essential train control units that relied on Electronic Programmable Logic Devices (EPLDs) were no longer available from the original component manufacturer. Siemens Mobility Inc. and MBTA engineers explored several solutions and ultimately partnered with Rochester Electronics to reverse-engineer the required components.

Using original Altera die stock and specialized methods, Rochester Electronics recreated the EPLDs, ensuring compatibility and safety through thorough testing and certification. The new parts were integrated into the fleet, restoring reliability, and preventing service disruptions.

This solution provided substantial cost savings relative to a full-system replacement, reduced ongoing maintenance expenses, and established a sustainable supply chain to meet future needs. The project was completed in seven months and extended the operational life of the MBTA’s infrastructure.

The Siemens-Rochester Electronics partnership exemplifies innovative problem-solving in the face of component obsolescence, delivering a cost-effective solution that preserved critical transit infrastructure, saved taxpayer dollars, and maintained service reliability for millions of Boston commuters.

Rochester provides proven expertise in solving complex obsolescence challenges and securing long-term reliability for critical systems.
