Anti-counterfeiting
|
The fraudulent manufacturing, distributing, and selling of fake and substandard semiconductors has become an omnipresent problem throughout the electronics industry.
The ever-shortening lifecycle of electronic components has left many industries looking for a solution for their immediate manufacturing needs as well as a long-term support strategy. This ever-growing need has, unfortunately, led to the proliferation of counterfeiting. Everyone in the electronics world knows all too well the catastrophic and compounding failures that can be caused by counterfeit components - to processes as well as to products. In our challenging economic times, no company can risk the loss of revenue that is bound to follow such failure. The dilemma: Buyers are aware that they must avoid the high-risk factor of sub-standard components, but they don't know which companies they can rely on for reputable service and product. The problems created by counterfeiters and unauthorized distributors cast a shadow on reputable manufacturers and distributors. The solution: There are only two fail-safe ways to ensure that you are purchasing components that are legitimate, traceable, and guaranteed:

Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) Anti-Counterfeiting Task Force
In 2006, Rochester launched a comprehensive anti-counterfeit awareness campaign when the rest of the industry was convinced that the problem was not serious enough. Rochester initiated the formation of the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) Anti-Counterfeiting Task Force and organized a well-attended symposium, which hosted speakers from industry and government.

Electronics ASD - "Official Manufacturer's Distributor Authorization Reference Manual"
Rochester continues to lead the way in the fight against sub-standard and counterfeit parts by partnering with the SIA to distribute the "Official Manufacturer's Distributor Authorization Reference Manual." This guide offers a comprehensive listing of original manufacturers and their authorized distributors and how to contact them, emphasizing the fact that re-testing and screening is not as effective a protection as buying from an authorized source.

Chinese Reliable Electronic Component Supplier (RECS)
China now has the largest electronics manufacturing customer base in the world. Rochester's Asian headquarters, located in Shanghai, has expanded twice in the last few years in order to provide optimum support to a diverse customer base throughout China, and we will continue to expand as the need demands.
In 2007, Rochester received the Chinese Reliable Electronic Component Supplier (RECS) classification by China's Ministry of Industry, a joint administrated program by the China Electronic Purchasing Association (CEPA) and the China Quality Association for the Electronics Industry (CQAE). Rochester continues to be an active supporter of RECS. |

Captain Rochester and the Quest for Traceability, Authorization and Quality
To combat the increasingly severe problems caused by counterfeit and sub-standard semiconductors, Rochester Electronics joined forces with the Semiconductor Industry Association to establish the SIA Anti-Counterfeit Task Force. In addition, Rochester continues to participate in international anti-counterfeit efforts, including the Reliable Electronic Component Suppliers Classification program in China (RECS).
To further this cause, Rochester Electronics introduced Captain Rochester - a strong and entertaining industry hero who promotes safe and secure methods of dealing with the procurement of semiconductors. As an icon, he has come to be a symbol of what is right about the industry. As Smokey the Bear is to preventing forest fires, Captain Rochester is to preventing customers from making mistakes in buying counterfeit or sub-standard devices. As new plots and adventures unfold, Captain Rochester will do more than battle against the "dark side" of the industry - he will interact in positive and beneficial relationships with other characters who will represent real-world allies dedicated to facilitating the purchase of legitimate semiconductor products. |
